Business License

Business License Tax Standardization Act
The SC General Assembly passed Act 176, SC Business License Tax Standardization Act, to streamline the business license process by creating the same process for taxing jurisdictions across the state. 

  • As of January 1, 2022, all municipalities in South Carolina that levy a local business license tax must comply with the law.
  • The standardization will require all property owner that rent their property to obtain a business license. 
  • The standard due date is April 30.
  • The standard license year is May 1 - April 30.
  • The standard calculation for business license tax using gross income will be based on prior calendar year. 
  • The standard application will be accepted as approved by SC Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Office. 
  • All businesses will be listed in the standard class schedule according to their North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) code.
  • Standard class schedule will be used as adopted by SC Revenue and Fiscal Affairs Office. 
  • A Local Business License Renewal Center, an online payment portal where businesses can renew all their local license at one time, will be created. 


All businesses located within the Town of McBee or performing work within the Town limits are required to obtain a business license each year, including Home-based businesses, Store-front businesses, Contractors, Rental Property Owners, etc.  

  • Businesses are required to pay an annual business license tax. Each yearly license shall be issued for a twelve-month period of May 1 - April 30.
  • Business License renewals are due April 30th of each year.
  • Business License tax is calculated on your gross revenue reported on your prior year's Federal Income tax return.
    • If you are a new business, your business license tax is calculated on projected gross revenue for the first year of operation.
  • All contractors are required to keep the business license on the job site or in your vehicle while performing work within the Town limits.

New Business Licenses
Steps for submitting an application for a new business license:

  1. Download Business License Application
  2. Application must be signed by owner, officer, or principal managing partner.
  3. Submit the application in person or via mail.
  4. Staff reviews and determines rates based on NAICS code.
  5. Staff will contact applicant to provide cost of the fee.
  6. Applicant pays via phone - 3rd party fees apply, mailed check or money order, or in person.

Business License Renewal
Businesses are required to pay an annual business license fee. Each yearly license shall be issued for a twelve-month period May 1 - April 30.

  • Business License renewals are due April 30th of each year.
  • Business License fee is calculated on your gross revenue reported on your prior year's Federal income tax return.
  • To avoid paying penalties on your annual business license renewal, the fee must be received and/or postmarked no later than April 30th.
